100 compositions online for the new year!

Posted by Richard Laurence on December 30, 2011 at 5:00 PM Comments comments (0)

Today I posted my 100th and 101st compositions online.  I still have about 8 in my mind and on paper to type up but it has been a good year for composing for me.  I have started to dwindle towards the end of the year though!

I thought I would run down through a list of new additions as I haven't added anything to my blog in ages!  (A little bit lazy!)

First of all, as usual there have been a few new additions to my educational pieces, notab...

Out with the old in with the new

Posted by Richard Laurence on June 11, 2011 at 2:29 PM Comments comments (0)

2011 has been a prolific year composing wise for me.  I still have a handful of old compositions to re-arrange and add as well as at least another ten new ones.

The 3 old compositions that have been added over the last month or so are all on my modern/other page.  These are 'Payn', 'Repetitive by Nature' and 'Windchimes of the Orient'.

'Payn' was one of my very first compositions which was written when my nan passed away.  'Repetitive ...

More Jazz Additions

Posted by Richard Laurence on April 19, 2011 at 2:30 PM Comments comments (0)

I've always felt that I should take a better look at some more jazz compositions.  Not necessarily trad jazz but the broad spectrum of jazz, blues and latin music.  I recently added my piece 'Lured into Temptation' which has a latin feel and I had a very prolific week last week as I composed two new jazz pieces.

'Bootleg Blues' follows a fairly simple 12bar pattern, however, I think the piece turned out quite well and I enjoyed playing the piece and improvising ar...

New Editions

I have added 6 new compositions to the site over the last couple of weeks.  Apart from my educational version of Baa Baa Black Sheep, all of these pieces are available to listen to via the music page.

"Love can pass you by" was written about 7 years ago after watching a film called he "The legend of 1900".  If you haven't seen it I suggest you do because its brilliant.  This piece of music pays homage to a piece from th film called "the crisis".  It's ve...

New Piece/New Year

Posted by Richard Laurence on January 11, 2011 at 9:29 AM Comments comments (0)

I've just added my first piece of 2011.  It's another old piece written when I was 16.  The millenium seems like only yesterday....

I was asked to compose and perform some music for a play called "Six characters in search of an author" by Pirandello for my local University.  The play is quite depressing but has a great climax.  I decided to write mostly incidental music to give an underlying tension to the play, however I kept returning to the same motif...

Y did I write this?

Posted by Richard Laurence on November 28, 2010 at 10:27 AM Comments comments (0)

I've just posted an old composition on my music and photos pages.  It's called Y but thats not it's original title.  I composed it during college because I wanted to write something that would be tricky to play.  I have since learned that doing this usually means that the music is often not great.

My piece of music called "Change is Inevitable" was an old college piece as well however I feel that that piece actually still sounds good to my ears.  "Y" on ...

Homage to Chopin

Posted by Richard Laurence on November 18, 2010 at 12:08 PM Comments comments (0)

I have just added my composition 'Twelfth Nightmare' to my classical sections.  It is based around Chopin's Revolutionary Etude and is dedicated to the great pianist and composer.

It is named Twelfth Nightmare due to Chopin's revolutionary being his 12th Etude and also because it is so tricky to play.  This should be a challenge to even the best of pianists I hope!

Any feedback on the piece would be great, whether positive or negative!

Cloud Suite

Posted by Richard Laurence on November 2, 2010 at 10:15 AM Comments comments (0)

I have finished making the videos for my suite of music called "Clouds".

The suite is designed to show changing weather throughout the day.  It starts brightly with Cumulus clouds but the weather turns and becomes rainy with thunderstorms but then brightens up towards the end again.  The order of the pieces of music in this suite are as follows:

1.  Cumulus

2.  Cirrus

3.  Cumulonimbus

4.  Stratus

Educational pieces

Posted by Richard Laurence on October 22, 2010 at 8:09 AM Comments comments (0)

I'm now starting to put on my educational pieces.  These pieces were orginally written for 2 music books.  The first one focused on all the musical things to do with the letter A and the second was all to do with the letter B.

You will find that most of these pieces are in the A keys and B keys because of this.  I had a few publishers interested in the idea at first but I would have needed to write an seven books to cover each of the note names as w...
